Associated Steel offers a broad mix of tool and die steels, including oil hardening, shock-resistant, hot working, and air hardening options. Our proprietary grades allow for a variety of choices depending upon working temperature, required surface hardness, strength, toughness and shock resistance. All tool steels (except when noted) come prepared as 100% decarb-free, blanchard ground top and bottom (+.015”/+.035” oversize) ready for additional heat treatment and final machining by the customer.
Tool & Die Steels
RHINO-DIE™ – [Pre-Hardened, High Performance Die Steel]
This pre-hardened, high performance die steel comes to you ready to machine and put into service. It is a modern tool and die steel (similar to a 4330 alloy), made to Clean Steel Production Technology. It provides excellent dimensional stability and has been field proven for zinc and aluminum die work, plastic and rubber molds, and for forming all types of sheet metal. It will accept many forms of surface conditioning, including flame and induction localized hardening, carbide coating, PVD and Nitriding.

KROME-DIE™ – [High Wear, Air Hardening, Decarb-Free Tool Steel]
This is the “least deforming” of all general purpose die steels. Because of its high chrome and high carbon, it is the ideal material for many applications where abrasion is a key factor. Consider this as an upgrade when specifications call out for AISI D-2 type tool steel. Typical applications include: blanking dies, shears, cold drawing dies, cams, coining dies, forming rolls and bending dies.

MOLEX® #7 – [Oil Hardening, Decarb-Free Tool Steel]
This is a superior quality oil hardening tool steel with exceptional toughness and the ability to develop a high degree of hardness. Should be considered as an upgrade in applications that typically call out for AISI 0-1, L-6 or 52100. Good allaround tool steel for applications including: collets, threading dies, cam rollers, swages, vise jaws, punches, and die blocks.

MOLEX® #8 – [Air Hardening, Wear Resistant Decarb-Free Tool Steel]
Offers excellent wear resistance, combined with good deep hardening characteristics. Its ability to show low distortion or movement in heat treatment makes this material an excellent product for many tool room applications where size stability is critical. Consider this as an upgrade when specifications call out for AISI A-2 type tool steel. Typical applications include: plastic mold dies, stamping dies, machine parts, cold trimming dies, mandrels, slitters and threading taps.

MOLEX® #13 – [Hot Work Tool Steel]
A versatile hot work steel that can be widely used in various hot and cold work tooling applications. The combination of good red hardness and abrasion resistance, with the ability to resist heat checking makes this a popular work horse tool steel. It can withstand drastic cooling from high operating temperatures. Consider this as an upgrade when specifications call out for AISI H-13 tool steel. Typical applications include: extrusion dies, hot shear blades, plastic mold cavities and hot forging dies.

LUSCO™ #7 – [Non-Deforming, Shock Resistant, Decarb-Free Tool Steel]
A superb choice of tool steel when applications call out for shock resistance at both high and low temperatures. This particular die steel is also excellent when impact and toughness are necessary. Consider this as an upgrade when specifications call out for AISI S-7 tool steel. Typical applications include: boilermaker tools, swaging dies, reamers, rivet busters, pipe cutter wheels and pneumatic chisels.
